Extra virgin olive oil could be included in the rheumatoid arthritis treatment protocol. On another occasion, the therapeutic efficacy of an extra virgin olive oil of excellence, high in polyphenols
A research at the University of Seville, and more specifically the experimental pharmacology group and clinical pharmacology, has demonstrated the beneficial effects of an extra virgin olive oil consumption in the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in laboratory cavities.
High-phenolic oil, known compounds for anti-inflammatory properties, have been used for experimentation.
The researchers divided the laboratory cavities into two groups, one fed with sunflower oil and the other with extra virgin olive oil. The two groups were observed for two months.
At the end of the trial it was observed that the group fed with extra virgin olive oil had an inflammation level at the joints lower than that of the group fed with sunflower oil.
“In this study, we have observed both macroscopically and tissue levels as high polyphenolic extra virgin olive oil has been able to reduce a number of mediators and biochemical parameters involved in inflammatory processes,” explains Maria Angeles Rosillo , the author of the work.
Earlier studies have shown that the incidence of this common disease is lower in the Mediterranean countries.
Following these results, researchers want to take a step further and experiment with extra virgin olive oil in a clinical trial in collaboration with the Virgen del Rocio University Hospital in Seville.
“The consumption of extra virgin olive oil prevents the development of rheumatoid arthritis at the experimental level. The discovery of this beneficial effect of extravirgin olive oil enhances the hypothesis that can be used preventively and therapeutically in treating this common disease by reducing the negative effects that accompany classic pharmacological therapy”, concluded Maria Angeles Rosillo.
